Marine application

General Marine Bonding & Sealing

General marine bonding and sealing covers the everyday joints, fittings and assemblies found across repair, refit and installation work. Product choice depends on what is being joined, how much the joint moves, and how quickly the work needs to progress.

Typical use cases

  • —Bedding and sealing deck fittings
  • —Sealing joints and seams
  • —Bonding fiberglass and metal components
  • —Panel and assembly bonding

Important selection factors

  • —Substrates on each side of the joint
  • —Joint movement in service
  • —Working time versus fast set
  • —Wet, salt or below-waterline exposure
  • —Initial hold needed during assembly
  • —Color

Choosing between 940A and 940A FS

Bostik 940A is the broad-use SMP option for marine bonding, sealing and perimeter work. Its longer working window is often useful for larger or detailed joints, and for work in warm Florida conditions where material can start to set sooner.

Bostik 940A FS is the faster-set option, for jobs where a shorter working and tooling window is acceptable and earlier progress matters.

Bostik 920 and 920 FS are the polyurethane alternatives. They are not positioned for UV-exposed bonding to glass. For current handling and cure figures, request the product documentation.

Common substrates & materials

  • —Fiberglass / GRP
  • —Aluminum, stainless steel and other metals
  • —Wood
  • —Selected plastics — some low-surface-energy plastics require review

Common problems & failure considerations

  • —Low-surface-energy plastics such as polyethylene
  • —Unidentified materials
  • —Joints that need high initial hold without temporary support

Common questions

What is the difference between 940A and 940A FS?

Both are SMP marine adhesive sealants. 940A has the longer working window, often useful for larger or detailed joints and warm conditions; 940A FS is the faster-set option where a shorter tooling window is acceptable and earlier progress matters.

What is the difference between SMP and polyurethane options?

Iris offers both SMP (940A, 940A FS) and polyurethane (920, 920 FS) sealants. The right family depends on the substrates, exposure and joint — use Application Support to narrow it.

When should the application be reviewed?

When low-surface-energy plastics or unidentified materials are involved, or when a joint requires high initial hold.
