What Adhesive Should You Use for a Boat Window?
There is no single best adhesive for every boat window. First confirm whether the job is bonding or installing glazing, or sealing the perimeter of a window already in place. Then identify the glazing material, frame or surrounding substrate, bond design, UV exposure and installation conditions.
Bonding a window or sealing its perimeter?
Bonding holds the glazing in the window assembly or opening. Perimeter sealing closes the exposed joint between an installed window and the structure around it. They are different functions, and a job may involve one or both.
See marine window bonding & glazing and marine window perimeter sealing. If the window is leaking, start with finding the water path.
Start with the glazing material
| Glazing | Bostik options | Must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Glass | Bostik 70-08A; in controlled production contexts, Bostik 70-08A AP may be relevant. | The glass type, UV protection at the bond line, the frame substrate and the preparation system. |
| Acrylic / Plexiglass | No product is assigned from the material name alone. | The exact sheet, any coating, the frame, the joint design and the applicable Bostik guidance — reviewed by Iris. |
| Polycarbonate | No product is assigned from the material name alone. 70-08A and 70-08A AP are not presented as compatible without verified guidance. | The exact material and coating, the frame and the joint design — reviewed by Iris. |
70-08A or 70-08A AP?
Bostik 70-08A is commonly used for field installation and refit glass glazing. Bostik 70-08A AP is more suited to controlled, repeatable production bonding.
They are not freely interchangeable. The choice depends on how and where the window is installed, so tell Iris whether the job is a one-off refit or a repeated production process.
Why UV protection and preparation matter
A window adhesive works as part of a system: the glass/adhesive interface and the frame substrate both affect what preparation is needed. Bostik states that 70-08A adheres well without primer on glass; its documentation separately says that a UV-resistant primer is not needed when the glass/adhesive interface is protected from UV by a ceramic coating.
Bostik Prep G Plus and Bostik Prep M are preparation products whose role depends on the verified system — neither applies to every window. Where UV protection or coating is unclear, Iris confirms the preparation system.
What to send Iris before choosing
- —Glazing material and any coating
- —Frame or surrounding material
- —New installation or refit
- —Whether the bond line is UV-protected, for example by a ceramic band
- —Joint design
- —Installation conditions
- —Whether you need bonding, perimeter sealing or both
Common questions
Can I use the same adhesive for glass and Plexiglass?
Not by default. Glass and acrylic (Plexiglass) are different materials, and an adhesive documented for glass is not automatically suitable for acrylic. Send the exact acrylic sheet, coating and frame details so Iris can review them against Bostik guidance.
Is 70-08A also used for window sealing?
Yes — Iris customers use Bostik 70-08A for marine window sealing as well as glass bonding. That applies where the glazing material, joint design, exposure and preparation suit it; uncertain perimeter joints and acrylic or polycarbonate windows are reviewed first.
Do I need primer for a boat window?
It depends on the system. Bostik states that 70-08A adheres well without primer on glass. Its documentation separately says that a UV-resistant primer is not needed when the glass/adhesive interface is protected from UV by a ceramic coating. The complete preparation system still depends on the glass, coating, UV exposure, frame and installation, so Iris confirms it for the specific job — especially where ceramic protection is absent or uncertain.
